My 14 twelvemonth old 10 x 30 Catechism Paradigm Stabilization binoculars rubberized blanket became sticky & gooey. Talcum powder did not solve the problem. Blackness safety got all over my fingers & under my fingernails. I read a mail service on topic Suddarth Optical so I phoned Cory who convinced me he was the person who could resolve the issue so I sent him my binoculars ii weeks agone.
Just received the binoculars. I'yard admittedly thrilled with the result. No more sticking as well as a comfortable grip overall accomplished past stippling the surface.

Sounds great, and I'm glad that there's a solution.
Out of curiosity, did they reskin the binoculars, or somehow stabilize the existing condom?

Was the cost of repair reasonable?

The problem is that rubber coating starts to decompose later on a number of years. You can remove the sticky coating with isopropyl alcohol.

Is that IPA to remove the rubber, or merely the superficial pasty top layer?
Using just IPA seems like a breakthrough. I used toluene on the sticky, gooey CZ seven x 50 BGA or Fuji 7 x 50 FMTR, MTR, and the -SX suffix versions of those.
Which had been exposed to hand oils, saltwater spray, tropical dominicus and estrus, etc.
Toluene is non easily plant now in California, nor xylene, nor methylene chloride, nor MEK.
My 15 ten 50 Canon has non been subjected to spray, grease, sweat, sun, etc. I have no experience nevertheless with stickyness on information technology.

IPA volition remove the sticky layer every bit far down every bit information technology goes. I have an sometime canon camera with a rubber grip that turned into a gooey mess after beingness in storage for a number of years. IPA removed the goo all the way down to the underlying plastic. I also take a gear up of speakers covered in a rubbery coating which started to pause down besides. IPA removed enough of the gooey mess so that it won't stain my hands or clothing if I accidentally brush against it. I'm sure I will have to treat the speakers to an IPA wipe down again in the nigh futurity.

I wonder if IPA would work on the sticky deteriorated 3M Nextel suede coatings which were used on Celestron telescopes ca early 1980's, and on some early laser hardware.
3M of course did not respond to repeated inquiries virtually this problem. The Nextel used glass beads ( early nanotechnology?) and an epoxy , IIRC, binder.

Cory removed all of the rubber, and so he stippled the gripping areas of the body with the result being a non slip grip. As for cost, I advise you call him to discuss your needs.

I have only used IPA to rub out the sticky, gooey mess on my 9½-twelvemonth-old Oberwerk 15x60. I'm impressed.
Does anyone empathize the chemistry (?) almost rubber "armoring"?

I know some of the wipers contain seventy% ipa? Is that enough for the job or need to go higher?

I have just used IPA to rub out the pasty, gooey mess on my 9½-twelvemonth-erstwhile Oberwerk 15x60. I'm impressed.
Does anyone understand the chemical science (?) about condom "armoring"?
Every case that I have treated
(near viii pair binoculars and on 4 radios) has been
a thin layer of "rubber-feel" stuff coated over hard plastic and then it feels similar safe.
It responds chemically to treatments you might utilize to remove tape or
bumper sticker residue, so I am assuming it is 'paritally cured' from birth.
The only treatments I accept ever given existent rubber jackets
are WD40 or mineral oil, to dissolve the white "condom bloom" on it..
Every bit with boots, information technology's just leftover mold-release wax crystals.

I know some of the wipers contain 70% ipa? Is that plenty for the chore or need to go higher?
I used Walgreens standard issue 91% IPA. Volition 70% IPA work? As the saying goes naught ventured, cipher gained.
